At Home Again, Inc. was founded by Susan Severson in 2007 after going through a very difficult family resettlement of her own. In April ’07, Susan’s father was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme – a brain cancer – and underwent surgery in Fairfax, VA (his hometown). Susan had owned and operated another small business, and was fortunate enough to be able to suspend work to travel to Virginia for four weeks to help her parents. Following his surgical recovery, Susan’s dad was well enough to travel to Florida to be seen at the Mayo Clinic and receive radiation and chemotherapy.
By mid-summer, it was decided that Susan’s parents would relocate to Jacksonville in order to continue her father’s care at the Mayo. However, after a month of living in a cramped bedroom in a small home with two grandchildren, a daughter, and a son-in-law, there was a sincere desire by all parties to secure a larger home. Therefore, both homes were put on the market, sold, and a new home located and purchased. There was not sufficient time to properly sort the huge home in Virginia that contained a lifetime of accumulated goods. Susan soon became intimately associated with the term “moving fatigue” after having not just one house to go through and pack up, but two.
Months after the move to the new house was finalized, and in the midst of still-unpacked boxes, Susan read about an organization of people who assist with the planning and execution of household moves for a living. The National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) was just the type of organization Susan’s family had needed to ease their transition. Susan, being an entrepreneur at heart, felt a call to join NASMM in order to help others who found themselves in the same type of situation she had so recently experienced. She felt her 15 years in the volatile telecommunications industry, eight of them as a project manager, plus two more years as a small business owner, would serve her well when starting At Home Again, Inc.
Susan completed training and accreditation for Certified Relocation and Transition Specialist (CRTS) and became a member of NASMM in October 2007. In March 2008, Susan also completed training and accreditation for Certified Senior Advisor (CSA). Susan is also a member of both the Women Business Owners of Jacksonville (JaxWBO) and the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce.
